The Post-Pop Trap

You know how it goes. A stock shows up on the top gainers list. Your phone buzzes: up 12% today. You buy the option. The stock keeps climbing, and somehow your option is worth less than you paid.

Right about the stock. Still lost money. That’s the Post-Pop Trap, and almost every trader I know has fallen into it.

Every app, alert and TV segment shows you the stock after it has already popped. By then the whole crowd is piling in, and the options get marked up to movie-theater prices. You pay the markup on the way in. When the excitement fades, the markup disappears, and it takes your money with it.

Buying post-pop is the trading version of cold popcorn. You paid full price, the fun part’s already over, and what’s left in the bag is good for nothing.

Those tools are built to show you what just happened. So you keep buying post-pop and paying full price, even when you pick the right stock.

I buy the kernels. The crowd buys the popcorn.

I get in pre-pop, while a stock is quiet and nobody’s watching and the options are cheap. Then I let the crowd show up after me.

What makes a Popcorn Setup

The Popcorn Setup is a small, fixed-cost options trade on a stock that’s gone quiet, taken before the crowd shows up. A pop is what it pays when it works. I’ve traded it the same way for 13 months, and before I take any trade, it has to pass three checks.

  1. The Kernel

The stock has to go quiet in a very particular way. Most quiet stocks don’t qualify.

  2. The Steam

The option has to be cheap enough that one pop can pay for a couple of duds.

  3. The Two-Second Rule

Before I get in, I already know how I’m getting out, win or lose.

21 plays in 13 months
1 to 2 a month. I pass on far more than I take.
Same size every time
2% to 3.5% of the account on each play.
Called in writing
Every entry and every exit, the day it happened.
Nothing went to zero
Every losing play was cut before it could.

Fourteen years studying market cycles taught me one thing: quiet never lasts. Every stretch of nothing ends in a move. The Popcorn Setup is built to get me in before it does.

That’s the skill behind the Popcorn Setup: finding the stock while it’s still quiet, before the crowd shows up.
